How to use a 4 in 1 pool test kits

A pool test kit is a set of chemical liquids and tablets that is used to test the acidity, alkalinity, chlorine and pH levels in swimming pools or spas. Note that different pool water test kits are used differently.

This article shows you how the Aussie Gold 4 in 1 test kit can be used:

For chlorine or bromine

  1. Fill the tubes with a sample of water from your pool.
  2. Drop a DPD1 tablet in the side marked Cl and Br.
  3. Replace the cap and shake until the tablet has dissolved.
  4. Match the colour on the chart on the side of the tube to get your reading for either chlorine or bromine.

For pH levels

  1. Fill the tubes with a sample of water from your pool.
  2. Add a drop of solution #4.
  3. Squeeze 5 drops of the solution #2 into the water sample next to the pH markings.
  4. Replace the cap and shake.
  5. Compare the colour with the adjacent markings to take your reading for pH.

Acid Demand Test

  1. Add solution #3 in the water sample from the pH test one drop at a time.
  2. Count the drops and keep adding them until you get a reading of 7.2
  3. Remember the number of drops added and refer to the acid demand chart in the test kit booklet to determine the quantity of acid required.

Total Alkalinity Test

  1. Fill the tube with your pool water till the total alkalinity test line.
  2. Add a drop of solution #4, then swirl.
  3. Add a drop of solution #5, then swirl.
  4. Add solution #3, one drop at a time, swirl between each drop and count the drops until colour changes from blue to clear or slightly yellow.
  5. Multiply the number of drops by 10 to determine ppm reading. This is the parts-per-million (ppm) total alkalinity of your water.
